Hello, hope those who are reading this are having a nice day. Though it
would seem like this post was created on 11th April, it is in fact only
being written up today, 26th April. This is because I am an expert
procrastinator and have mastered the art of not being productive. This
site in truth only took a cummulative time of around 10 hours. Which to be
frank (although I am Jerome) is still longer than what people today can
achieve with AI. I did mention that I used LLMs to assist but it was mostly
only used for things that were not very clear to a beginner. Things such as
how to structure CSS and what are the ways to handle multiple HTMLs. It is
quite sad that I've learnt this in my poly days but have retained nothing at
all. But I am digressing from the purpose of this post. So I shall get into
it now before I further chat on about things that aren't related.
To start, I went into this project with one thought: "I want to create a
website that catalogues and 'archives' my thought processes and knowledge."
Not sure if I can keep to that promise but we'll see how it goes in the coming
months. To begin this project, I went to neocities.org and did the usual admin
stuff; creating an account, logging in, basic navigation and tutorials.
From there, I went through colour palettes and though of what I felt suited
my current brand and vibe. I wanted something minimalistic, "hotel"-esk.
I wanted something akin to Wes Anderson's movies, specifically "The Grand
Budapest Hotel". (I have yet to watch the movie but I think YouTube Shorts
has filled me in) Also, I'm pretty sure I was subconciously influenced by
my time spent playing Deadlock (Valve). If you are in the mood to waste some
time you are free to invert the my logo or the site's colour palette and you
will realise that my colour palettes are that of the Patrons, 'Hidden King'
and 'Arch Mother'. This was not intended at all but I like it so I'm keeping
it.
After deciding on the colour palette, I moved on to deciding about the
backend structure and design. I come from a 'Object-oriented Programming' background
so I wasn't familiar with the way HTML and CSS handles the backend. But after
a bit of messing about (and some AI assistance) I got the sidebar working.
Which is the main way you navigate through this site. It took a lot longer than
I expected. I had to wrap my head around the idea of containers-within-containers
and not just putting 'A' next to 'B'. Had a friend of mine help me a bit on that
part and it did wonders in my understanding. A big frustration I had when creating
the base structure of this website was dealing with the "nonsensical" syntax.
This is my opinion but I feel that the descriptions used as 'Keywords'
such as 'color' were rather imprecise. Make a guess on what colour does
keyword 'color' influence. Cause I sure as h*ll didn't! (And yes I will be
censoring myself for the sake of modesty, just in case a future employer
happens upon this site) 'color' influences the colour of the container's
text! Like... huh?! It is such a broad description! *EVERYTHING* has colour!
Things like that made the learning process a tad bit frustrating. However,
once I figured out how CSS is supposed to be structured alongside the important
HTML keywords like 'div' and 'class', it was rather smooth sailing. The current
site you are looking at was created on the same day as me typing this.
All within 2 hours... I think?
Right now I'm probably gotta add the remaining sections and think about
what other stuff I wanna include. Thanks for reading by the way if you
did actually reach this point. Have a nice rest of your day and feel free
to look through the rest of the site!
